Killer Frequency is set in the 1980s (hello, retro vibes!). You play as Chuck, a local radio host, trying to run his radio show, The Scream while navigating a terrifying, twisted event that keeps the whole town awake.
A killer is on the loose, attacking the citizens of your town, Gallows Creek, and you need to help your callers survive by offering advice and solving puzzles with the help of your radio producer, Peggy!
To complete these puzzles you will need to use clues and information found around the studio to prevent the victims from being killed. Whether they will make it or not depends strictly on your choices and ability to solve these puzzles.
BONUS INFO: The game includes references to numerous horror films including The Fog, Friday the 13th, and the Scream franchise.
The Whistling Man
But who is this killer, you will wonder, and why is he on the loose attacking people? Is there a motive after all? The story behind the Whistling Man goes way back to the ’50s!
Edward Marshall Mooney, also known as The Whistling Man, was a serial killer active in Gallows Creek during the 1950’s. Mooney, who was always wearing a wooden white mask with blood splattered on the jaw, murdered around a dozen civilians without having a motive. While doing so he was whistling a distinct tune, and that’s what gave him the name “The Whistling Man“.
On the night of September 3rd, 1958, after being chased by the police he leaped from a cliff, falling several feet before hitting the water. A search was unable to locate his remains and this location has since been named after the killer, being now known as Whistling Point.
A decade after his death, the date of Edward Marshall Mooney’s death was declared as an informal holiday by Gallows Creek High School students called “Whistling Night”. Every year on this day, they would make prank calls or even dress up as the Whistling Man and commit acts of vandalism, breaching the peace, and trespassing.
On the night of September 2nd to September 3rd, 1987, the Sheriff of the town gets murdered by a killer who was wearing the same mask, and clothes and was whistling the same tune as the Whistling Man. The killer is on a killing spree as more and more people are attacked that night and so, the legend of the Whistling Man is reborn.
Gameplay
Killer Frequency is more like a horror puzzle game than anything else, pushing you to explore your surroundings to look for the answers rather than simply guessing.
You are chilling running your night show, and you can pick what records to play or adverts for businesses so you can privately talk to Peggy, the radio producer. When 911 calls get through the line things are a bit different. You have to focus on what information the caller gives you and based on that, you must help them live. Most of the time, the caller is being chased by the killer and you are the only one who can save them.
The dialogue choices you make will play a vital role in the final outcome. Will the victims live or die? Will you provide them with the accurate and helpful advice they need so they can escape or will you let them die? Everything is up to you! (Stressful huh?)
Depending on how well you protect everyone, the personality of the Whistling Man will actually change resulting in different game endings.
Overall, the game’s story is very interesting and you will enjoy every minute! As for the music you can play, it is very 1980s and fits the game perfectly. Here’s a playlist on YouTube with the songs that are included in the game:
Puzzles
When it comes to puzzles they are fun and unique. Killer Frequency necessitates you to listen closely to details said or pay attention to the paper you’ve placed in front of you. All the information you need is hidden in the details.
Some of the puzzles are very easy and make sense once you start to think about them, but others are a little harder and require your logic skills.
