Cairn was my first experience with a climbing game, and it certainly left me with emotions of excitement! I can’t wait for it to be released so I can enjoy it in all its glory!

If you want to know what makes that game so unique and amazing stick around. In this article, we are going to analyze everything we know so far about Cairn.

Game Overview

Release:TBA 2025
Developer:The Game Bakers
Publishers:The Game Bakers
Platform:PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox Series X
Genre:Action, Adventure, Indie, Simulation, Sports
Mode:Single-player

Being a climbing simulator, you could easily guess that this game is about rocks, climbing and that’s it. Well, I can reassure you that it is so much more than this.

Cairn offers a whole experience, and what I mean by that is that it makes you think about every step you take. Every move counts, after all, it’s about you surviving under extreme conditions.

I would dare to say that, to me, it felt like a strategic game among everything else. And this is one of the things that made me love every second I spent playing the demo.

Gameplay

Cairn gameplay

In Cairn you play as Aava, a passionate climber who has only one goal. She wants to be the first to conquer the daunting summit of Mount Kami! Her only companion is Climbot, a little robot who keeps your climbing anchors in check.

Aava’s climbing is super realistic and you can feel that. Listening to her when she is climbing makes you feel the stress, the tension, and the relief of real rock climbing!

You have to find the best holds and place your hands and feet seamlessly with simple controls. But you need to be careful, otherwise, you will fall!

It’s certainly a game that requires time and patience. So keep that in mind. But you will see for yourself that the slow gameplay will not annoy you, since you will be so focused on climbing and surviving.

Survival Mechanics

Cairn has survival mechanics, and you’ll have to manage not just your physical health, but also your energy, hunger, and thirst. But that’s not all! You will also find yourself fighting the elements too! Get ready to climb the highest mountains facing high winds, rain, and sub-zero temperatures whilst trying to make the right climbing moves. Sounds extreme and the game delivers that feeling 100%!

You will always carry your backpack with you. This will hold vital items that you will need along the way. Things like water, chocolate, medicine and even climbing anchors will be with you, inside your backpack. However, you need to keep track of what you are using, cause these are not unlimited and you will need to refill your water bottles or find more food, etc.
