When we took the decision to rejoin Aion, we both asked ourselves the same question: Which one? The original game, which has seen countless updates, is now known as Aion Live, while Aion Classic is a newer release of the game, but set back in its (almost) original version, long before all the new and fancy updates they released through the years.
Now, whether you’re a new or an old player looking to come back to Atreia, choosing which version of the game will you play is crucial – if you don’t want to waste your time, that is. By the way, we’ve played both versions of the game, and we finally ended up with Aion Classic, but more on that in a bit.
What is Aion Live?
In short, Aion Live is the original version of the game. Its first version was released on November 25, 2008, in South Korea, and in 2009 it was released in the USA. Aion Live is currently in version 8.4, and it has received tons of updates, improvements, changes, and even new classes (characters) and maps.
If you want to see what’s new with Aion, then this is the best version to go with, as it includes everything latest with the game. Be aware though: It has nothing to do with the older versions though, and that’s a notice for older players looking at a comeback. But if you’ve been bored with the old gameplay, then Aion Live will give you a fresher start.
When it comes to the biggest differences, Aion Live features more maps, classes, dungeons, world bosses, and gear customization options, while leveling up is a whole lot faster and easier than ever before. The game also receives constantly new updates and challenges, keeping players active.
What is Aion Classic?
Aion Classic focuses on providing players with the “original spirit” of Atreia, going back to its almost original routes and removing many of the things that Aion Live currently has. Although a “classic” version of Aion, it’s still improved a lot from the original Aion 2.0 to 3.0 versions, providing new features, options, and even a new map.
If you’re an older player, you should feel right at home with this version, apart from a small learning curve for everything that has been added through the years. If you’re a new player, on the other hand, you should expect a classic MMORPG with lots of PVE and PVP, many active players, and a slower level-up.
Ideally, we recommend joining the European servers provided by GameForge, as they seem to have more players, and the LFG and Broker systems look more active. Unfortunately, you’re going to see a lot of bots during your gameplay, but they can be helpful when you have quests that require you to kill other players.
European vs. American servers: Where’s everyone playing?
If you’re deciding between Aion Live and Aion Classic, the most active player base tends to be on Aion Classic, particularly on European servers. This version appeals to those who prefer a nostalgic, challenging MMORPG experience with mechanics resembling Aion’s early days.
The European Aion Classic servers are more populated compared to North American servers, which have significantly fewer players. Additionally, the EU version has updates and a broader community to support ongoing gameplay.
NA servers do offer higher XP and loot rates but lack the same level of population activity, making group-based content and PvP more challenging to access.
On the other hand, Aion Live has a smaller but steady player base, focusing on modern content and features. However, development for Aion Live has slowed compared to Classic, leading many players to switch over.
Which version of the game is right for you?
If you’re looking for a bigger player base and lots of PVP, maybe something challenging and a bit slower gameplay, then Aion Classic is the best choice overall – especially if you’re an old player feeling nostalgic. On the other hand, if you want a smaller but loyal player base and a more modern and polished MMORPG game, Aion Live is surely the better choice here.
It doesn’t seem that the perfect answer exists here, as both versions of the game are unique in their own ways and different in so many ways that simply attract a different user base. The best way to know for sure? Try both versions and you’ll quickly find out which one is the best for you.
For us, Aion Classic seems to be the go-to option, especially now that GameForge is getting ready to release the 3.0 version (for the European servers, as American servers already got the update), which many players are looking for.
How to download the right version of the game
Downloading the right version of the game and joining the American or European servers is a bit tricky at first. That’s because NCSoft has its own website, and GameForge also has its own, so which one is the right one? Well, both.
If you want to access Aion Live’s and Classic’s servers in North America, you’ll have to download the game from the official website made by NCSoft. The GameForge Launcher on the other hand is also giving you both versions of the game, but on the European servers instead.
Unlike the North American servers, GameForge seems to release the newest versions more slowly, but their servers have higher popularity. On the other hand, taking your time before releasing a new big version is always appreciated when it comes to providing more stability to your game.
If you’re living in the USA and thinking of joining Aion but looking for more players, you may want to think about using a VPN service or a similar service.
