When it comes to entertainment, thereās nothing that can beat a good TV Show based on my favorite video game. Although the number isnāt as high as many would have thought, Iāve watched five of the best TV Shows based on video games, and hereās what you need to know about each one of them.
I know, I know, āOnly 5 TV Shows, Panos? Were you bored or something?ā Well, theoretically, I could write for more than 5 TV Shows based on video games, but I like writing only for content that Iāve watched. I donāt like giving recommendations for something I havenāt already watched, as many other sites do these days, and itās all about my personal opinions, thoughts, and preferences.
Although Iāll do my best to write about more TV Shows based on video games shortly, Iāll keep things simple for now, starting with the best of the rest. Also, donāt expect me to write about any anime or cartoons ā Seriously, I wonāt.
Now, although those TV Shows are based on popular video games, you can still watch them without playing the games first ā even if thatās crucial for some, you really donāt have to be a gamer to watch, enjoy, and understand them.
1. The Last Of Us
Why? The Last Of Us is arguably one of the best games that the world has ever seen. And no, Iām not exaggerating. Itās such a well-designed game, even someone who hates games can find themselves replaying it for a second or third time. The Last Of Us comes in two parts: Part 1 and Part 2. The TV Show is based on the first game, while the second season is based on the second installment.
Storyline: The Last Of Us is not your typical TV Show, instead of another same-old-same story that usually ends up with infected, here we have a world that got infected from fungus. Although the show starts with Joel and his daughter, the story takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been brutally destroyed. Joel is a survivor, and he has been hired to smuggle a little girl named Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. Itās a crazy journey, full of heartbreaking and scary moments, intense survival instincts, and effects that will blow your mind.
Who plays? Pedro Pascal portrays Joel Miller, alongside Bella Ramsey as Ellie Williams, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller (Joelās brother), and Anna Torv as Tess.
Is it worth it? If it wasnāt, we wouldnāt waited for the second season, which is expected to be released sometime in 2025.
2. The Witcher
Why? Because who doesnāt love watching a monster hunter trying to survive while having to deal with powerful wizards and creatures? The game has seen huge success since its release, and although itās actually based on a book, if youāve played the game you owe to yourself to watch the TV Show.
Storyline: The series revolves around Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter struggling to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. The show intertwines the destinies of three main characters: Geralt of Rivia (a monster hunter with superhuman abilities), Yennefer of Vengerberg (a sorceress with a tragic past), and Ciri, a young princess with a mysterious heritage and powerful abilities.
Who plays? Although the game franchise seems untouchable, the TV Show has seen its ups and downs over the years. While the show started with Henry Cavill playing the main character, Geralt of Rivia, for three whole seasons, Liam Hemsworth has now taken over the role and we will see him as Geralt in the upcoming fourth season.
Is it worth it? Watching Henry Cavill play such a character is pure awesomeness. Although we wonāt see him anymore, Iām pretty positive that Liam Hemsworth can absolutely nail this character, as heās a must-watch actor from many points of view.
3. Fallout
Why? Well, basically because the TV Show is based on one of the greatest video game series the world has ever seen. And because of Ella Purnell, as it gives the show her own star, just because.
Storyline: The TV Show takes place 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse. People live in underground fallout shelters until they are forced to go out into a wasteland filled with radiation, mutated monsters, and a clueless society of those who remained on the surface. I canāt say much without spoiling the storyline, so just start watching it already!
Who plays? For starters, Ella Purnell is our main protagonist, and she plays Lucy MacLean. We also get to see Aaron Moten as Maximus and the amazing Walton Goggins as Cooper Howard. There are many other great names playing on the show, but Iāll leave you to find out yourself.
Is it worth it? Yeah, it does! From the graphics and effects to the whole environment, this show has created a unique and extraordinary world.
4. HALO
Why? Because thatās the perfect menās show when hanging out with friends and you want to watch something epic filled with battles in the future.
Storyline: HALO takes place in the 26th century. Itās all about a genetically enhanced soldier who leads an offensive against an evil theocratic movement of several alien races. Itās about discovering mysteries surrounding an artificial world.
Who plays? Pablo Schreiber (Master Chief), Shabana Azmi (Admiral Margaret Parangosky), and Natasha Culzac (Riz-028) are among the few names playing on the show, although I only knew Schreiber.
Is it worth it? While itās not a TV Show that will blow your mind, itās absolutely worth the watch, especially if you are a fun of the gaming titles.
5. Twisted Metal
Why? If I say that Anthony Mackie is the main character in Twisted Metal, would that be enough? Yes? Great!
Storyline: The show basically follows John Doe (played by Anthony Mackie), an outsider whoās offered a chance at a better life inside the city if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. John, a guy in love with his car, is one of the best drivers the world has ever seen, being able to travel from place to place without getting killed while keeping his humor at all times.
Who plays? There are many great names to mention here, including Anthony Mackie as John Doe, Stephanie Beatriz as Quiet, Will Arnett as Sweet Tooth, Mike Mitchell as Stu, and Thomas Haden Church as Stone, just to name a few.
Is it worth it? Let me be honest here: When I watched the trailer, I kinda left disappointed. I donāt know why, but I was. When I watched the first 5 minutes of the first episode, I was all in, and Iāve watched the whole first season in one sitting. Yep, it was pretty good, different, funny, filled with action and crazy moments.
